Crosshatching at 90-degree angles creates a flat, rigid appearance in drawings, similar to looking at a chain-link fence straight-on where the grid appears perfectly square. When a form turns or sits at an angle, hatching lines should cross at 45 degrees or less to create perspective and depth, much like how a fence's squares compress into diamonds when viewed in perspective. Effective crosshatching serves a dual purpose: it darkens areas while also describing the direction and volume of the underlying form, rather than serving as a flat shading technique.
